Faith’s story

I found the www.yeastconnection.com website a few months ago after I bought The Yeast Connection Handbook and The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health and I just wanted to tell you that my life has turned around so drastically that it is almost unbelievable.

I am a 25-year old African-American woman who has suffered from numerous ear infections since I was a little girl. In high school, I began getting sinus infections and I took a variety of prescription allergy medications for seen years.

When I got to college, I got a new symptom: My voice went hoarse for an entire year. I was taken to speech pathologist, to no avail. My mother heard of a home remedy for my voice – apple cider vinegar, water, and honey. That did help but I did not want to do that daily and it only helped temporarily. I tried drinking more water. That did help some.

Then about a year ago, I had three colds in a two-month span. I don’t know why. The doctor said it was just a bad flu season. Soon after, I got a bacterial infection, a week later a yeast infection, then another bacterial infection then another yeast infection. This went on for four months. Over that time frame I took a lot of antibiotics. My body was really in a mess!

My doctor told me that some women just go through things like that. I knew I just couldn’t live with this for the rest of my life. I asked her to refer me to an infectious disease doctor but she said that he would probably tell me the same thing.

My doctor did advise me to start taking acidophilus supplements. So got some information about “good bacteria” versus “bad bacteria” and how they can cause yeast problems.

My supervisor had told me his son is allergic to yeast, so I passed on some information to him and he told me that his son was already taking the acidophilus supplements.

He also suggested that I may be allergic to yeast, too, so he recommended to me the books that changed my life: The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health by Drs. William Crook and Carolyn Dean and Dr. Crook’s The Yeast Connection Handbook.

I filled out the questionnaire, and from my high score, especially for all the antibiotics I’ve taken over the years, it was apparent to me that my supervisor had probably done a better job of diagnosing me than all my doctors did over all those years.

Let me back up a bit here and let you know that I am a self-confessed sugar freak. I thought I couldn’t live without my daily Snickers bar, so I really resisted the idea of giving that up. It took me a couple of more weeks of misery and the feeling I was about to get another yeast infection before I decided I really didn’t have anything to lose, so I started the diet. I was also taking acidophilus.

Then I did the challenge and discovered that I was most allergic to sugars and seriously processed foods. I’ll be the first to tell you this diet isn’t easy, especially for someone who loves sugar as much as I do. But it is so worth it!

On the third day, the die-off started. I wanted to quit! My knees were wobbly; my hands were shaking. I was in a really bad mood. But that only took a day. The very next day, I felt like I was on top of the world.

I learned that all of the symptoms that I have experienced all my life were merely that – symptoms! I thought it was normal to have dry skin, be moody, flaky scalp, bad breath, sharp pains in my thumbs and neck simultaneously, sharp pains in my calves, cold hands and feet, sweaty palms, morning breath, low energy, smelly feet, white tongue, etc. All of those symptoms are gone!

I didn’t lose weight, since I am already very thin. In fact, I gained two pounds, which I think is a healthy sign my body is getting back into balance.

It’s been eight months now, and I’ve found a “happy medium” that works for me: I do the diet strictly for a week, then for a week I add a little fruit. Once a month, I reward myself with something I really want: a Snickers bar. No, my sugar cravings haven’t totally disappeared!

When I eat that Snickers bar – sometimes immediately or sometimes a few hours later, I know my body is saying it doesn’t like that. I’ve found it just makes me feel good to have that little indulgence. It doesn’t set me back totally, but it does remind me how far I’ve come.

It’s spring – the time of the year that once made me miserable. It was especially difficult since I am a singer, but my allergies wouldn’t allow me to get a sound out after 10 p.m. I’m not blowing my nose at all this spring—I just don’t have that issue anymore. What a delight!

Now I am so in tune with my body. If I eat something wrong, I can feel a little extra discharge from "Down Under" and I know that I have to cut back or eliminate. Thank you for this book! I honestly feel like my life has been saved!! God bless you from the bottom of my heart for helping me save my life!
